James Madison (4th president) "In framing a government, which is to be administered by men over men, the great difficulty lies in this: you must first enable the government to control the governed, and in the next place, oblige it to control itself." Born: March 16, 1751 in Port Conway, Virginia. Death: June 28, 1836 in Montplier, Virginia. Political Party: Democratic- Republican
- chosen as Jefferson's successor.
-received most of his votes from the southern states. First term:1809-1813
-Inauguration: Mach 4, 1809
-Vice president: George Clinton of New york. Second term:1813-1817
-Inauguration: March 4, 1813
-Vice president: Elbridge Gerry of Massachusetts.
The inauguration of James Madison introduced the country to many new techniques and ideas.Madison's reasoning's and incorrect judgements caused our society an abundance of bad circumstances but in turn resulted in promising compromises and outcomes. As one of America's early presidents, James Madison deserves a B for his false notion (being his first mistake.) but with its later compliments (total turn around.) that helped the economy grow and prosper.
Madison shared many similar views as that of the three presidents in office before him. Like the previous founding fathers, Madison wanted to help the new America expand and become better for the society as a whole.Madison also shared Jefferson's distrust of centralized federal power, however he disagreed with Hamilton's viewpoints/ politics seeing how they would mostly benefit northern merchants and bankers instead of the southern common-folk like himself. Throughout his presidency, Madison also worked to increase trade with foreign shippers. To complete this he legalized trade with great Britain and revised the non-intercourse act which reopened trade with both Britain and France. Shortly after, Madison and many others assumed that napoleon (king of Britain) lifted restrictions on the American shipping, and in effect Madison prohibited trade with Britain in 1810. This ended all peace negotiations and hopes America had with foreign power. later in 1811, Madison's proposal of an embargo against Britain was passed by congress. Congress was of great assistance during this time, by agreeing with Madison's proposals along with giving their own personal opinions on this viewpoint. When congress received Madison's 4 reasons for declaration of war with Britain, they agreed and the process was settled. America was going to re-enter war with its motherland once again. This was considered a very bad idea, because of all the economical harm, domestic and international crises it caused the new country as well as the many new debts introduced. Fortunately, Madison with his quick mind was able to turn the tables and represent the war of 1812 (Mr. Madison's war) as a restored reputation with the public. This created the era of good feelings that helped America become confident and prosper/ advance once more. Shortly after signing the treaty of Ghent (declaring the end of the war.) he also agreed to the opening of the second bank, this helped organize the debts owed and replace everything back into its original order.
As previously explained, Madison was a quick thinker. He may have made many mistakes, but unlike the majority of our population he was able to clean up his disasters and restore America the way it should be. This characteristic may have made Madison one of history's best fixer-uppers. Perhaps one of Madison's most influential behaviors was its ability to become involved in foreign affairs. Yes, this did result in many bad circumstances and had caused the country even more crisis when not needed, but it also did result in the introduction of trade with all of its neighboring countries and prosperity of wealth and compromise between each other.(In later years having an ally is appreciated during times of war.)
Through this understanding one must say that Madison was an interesting fellow with many of his own viewpoints and ideas that in turn resulted to our disadvantage. Unlike the previous candidates before him though, Madison was able to take these times of crisis and create good out of the ashes of bad. Madison, like everyone else, made many mistakes- which is why his grade was depleted, but he was able to fix it in the long run- which is why he is not a failure. Madison, the fourth president of the USA was a moderate, yet beneficial president.
